WHERE THERE ARE PEOPLE STILL IN NEED, WE’LL BE THERE LENDING A HAND WITH DIRECTIONS TO PTSD SUPPORT GROUPS.
A Loma Prieta Earthquake survivor and his wife
Hello Aaron, Thank you for taking my call. This is hard for me because my husband was at the Cypress viaduct when the quake happened. He broke his back and was trapped for about 4 hrs. He was coming home to Los Gatos from work in Berkeley. Sadly my husband Carman Leonard Smith died in March of this year. This is his obituary http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/mercurynews/obituary.aspx?n=carman-smith&pid=170150561 He died due to a fall while hanging clothes in the line he broke his hip. After surgery his recovery got complicated by bronchitis and pneumonia and many of his vital organs began to fail. After 24 years of the metal rods in his back his legs began to weaken and pain began to bothered him the last 5 years. But he was a "tough old bird" and stubbornly helped around the house, volunteered at the SJC Airport and traveled to the rain forest of Peru. In 2007 he was interviewed by Discovery Channel for the special "Decoding Disaster" regarding the infrastructure in our nation. I learned about Trauma Preparation from the community/family/friends network point to be able to recover from such a horrific event. We need people: neighbors, friends, family and community. This has been my experience. While I'm still grieving my husband's death, I'm available and would like to speak to the firefighters and paramedics who saved his life. Sincerely, Olga Enciso Smith

Allied Ambulance (also known as Bay Cities Ambulance) was headquartered in Oakland, California, at 1510 MacArthur Blvd, near Highland General Hospital. (The house is still there). Allied was formed from 3 bay area ambulance companies (Doctors, Bay Cities, Electric Ambulance) that merged into what would be known as Allied Ambulance on January 1, 1977.
Allied was staffed by EMS personnel who previously worked at Valley, Acme Western, Regional, Mobile Life Support (MLS), and other affiliated ambulance companies in the SF Bay Area. Many Allied staff joined Regional/AMR in 1990.
Allied Ambulance was the primary ambulance service provider for East Oakland, the City of Alameda, and Emeryville. Allied units ran using #40 series call signs for East Oakland, #30 series for Alameda, and #20 series call signs for West Oakland.
Prior to 1982, the 9-1-1 ambulance system was run primarily by EMT-1A personnel. In 1982, Alameda County began a pilot Paramedic program, and adopted full paramedic services in 1984 through 1987. Paramedic Units ran from PM41 to PM47, EMT units ran from AP46 to AP49, “AP” stood for “Ambulance Private.”
Prior to 1984, Allied also served the island of Alameda as its primary ambulance provider (AP33). Alameda Fire ran tandem with Allied from 1982 to 1984 until ALCO approved single provider service. Allied Ambulance maintained a crew station on Alameda island. Alameda Fire began solo EMT transport services in 1984.
In the late 1980’s, Allied took over the West Oakland area formerly served by Acme Western Ambulance.
Allied Ambulance and its crews were at ground zero for earthquake operations centered around the October 17, 1989 (Loma Prieta) earthquake and Highway 880 (Nimitz) Cypress freeway collapse.
After many decades serving Oakland, Allied Ambulance lost its service contract and ended services in June 1990.
Many people started their careers through Allied as Emergency Medical Technician’s, Paramedics, and dispatchers.
As a result of the experiences working at Allied, many folks have moved into positions as Police & Fire Administrators, nurses, doctors, PA’s, emergency managers, and other positions around the SF Bay Area, California, and beyond.
Thanks to David Burns, former Allied Ambulance Paramedic Supervisor.

Loma Prieta Earthquake Response Team – Police / Fire / EMS
Hello,
I'm honored to be coordinating the 25th reunion of fellow Bay Area EMS workers who responded to the Loma Prieta Earthquake and I-880 Cypress Freeway Structure Collapse at 5:04 PM on October 17, 1989. We are working with Oakland Fire Department’s Community Outreach Department (CORE), they will be having an earthquake preparedness fair on Oct, 17, 2014 at Station 3 next to Cypress Memorial Park.
The public is invited and are encouraged to bring their families. LP25 starts at 11 AM to 11:30 with dignitaries and media. The fair is from 11:30 to 2 PM, there will be many activities for the kids, LP25 sponsors will handing out earthquake awareness material and prizes. We will have a combined booth alongside Alameda County EMS, this is a great time to meet and thank your Bay Area first responders.
We will be presenting an original Allied Ambulance paramedic shirt to the Mayor of Oakland which be signed by the attending former EMT/Paramedics. If you can't make it, CNN, KTVU Channel 2 News and others will provide coverage. Please email stories or pictures, Google+ or ‘like’ us on Facebook to show your support.
Our team is focused on reducing PTSD in emergency workers who are routinely dealing with real-world medical challenges and disaster scenarios. Dr. Tamara Greenberg and Karen Goering both PTSD specialists, are helping our organization's efforts in promoting public understanding, assisting with support and finding treatment options for Fire/Police and EMS. (http://EMSPTSD.org http://wcpr2001.org/ ) Dr. Paul Szotek, MD will be demonstrating a video streaming solution called Spectacle which is used for trauma management of multiple patients at the Indy 500 race.
Two other noted Google Glass innovators are also planning discussions and Q& A sessions. Ned Sahin, PhD, will be giving everyone a glimpse into advancements in potential treatment for Autism (Brain Power LLC) and John Scott will show us the future of integrating surgical monitoring technology with Google Glass (Context Surgery).
Special thanks to Miranda Kramer, David Burns, Bruce Hagen, Martin Mora and many others who have helped with planning, logistics and communications. Our Loma Prieta 25th anniversary website is 1989earthquake.org please e-mail us with questions or to request more information: remember@1989earthquake.org. Facebook: facebook.com/1989earthquake.

Martin Mora was working as an Allied Ambulance Paramedic on October 17, 1989 and conducted the rescue of Buck Helm, a victim who was trapped in his crushed vehicle for 7 days in the Cypress Structure Collapse. Martin received his award for outstanding service from the County of Alameda, California for his efforts during the earthquake. He was a ER tech at Children’s Hospital, has been working for almost 20 years with the San Jose Fire Department and has been involved in a multitude of civic / volunteer groups in the Bay Area. Martin’s contributions have been recognized by numerous
organizations such as the Latino Firefighters of Northern California and several overseas charities.
“The people that we are honoring want to make a difference in the world,” said Master of Ceremony Rigo Chacon. “But yet they do not seek any recognition.”Martin Mora, one of the honorees has been a member of the San Jose Fire Department for 15 years (at the time of this award) and is a member of the Latino Firefighters Association of Northern California, ‘Los Bomberos’.”Being a professional firefighter is the best job in the world,” Mora said. “I am truly blessed to work with the brave men and women from the San Jose Fire Department”. Aside from being a firefighter, Mora spends thousands of hours doing community services local, national and also internationally. He participates in the toy and food drive programs which helps those less fortunate, he teaches CPR classes, and teaches fire safety in elementary school classrooms throughout the Bay Area.
Martin has trained many firefighters from Latin American Countries in both firefighting & EMS. He has coordinated the transfer of surplus fire equipment to 3rd world countries and supplies including vaccinations, medication, clothing and disaster management gear. He also sponsors children in difficult situations so they can get a proper education. Martin, typically modest as always, simply says he was again “blessed” to be Fireman of the Year in 2013, we are the ones who are truly blessed to have him serving all of us. Numerous people have suggested Martin run for public office, he said "if I was elected in any capacity I would help everyone out there". Simply judging by his record, we are sure he would!
Miranda is a native of San Francisco. In 1989 she was an EMT and Assistant Operations Manager at Allied Ambulance, fortunately she was dispatching at 5:04PM on Oct. 17, 1989. Always the take charge leader, Miranda played a pivotal role in maintaining an orderly and strategic EMS response to the incident. All of the citizens of Oakland are truly thankful for her exceptional performance, her calmness under pressure undoubtedly saved many lives on that fateful day! Miranda received an award for her outstanding service from the County of Alameda, California in conjunction with her efforts and continues her charity work.
She has been a registered nurse for 16 years and has worked at U.C.S.F. since 1997. She graduated from the U.C.S.F. School of Nursing in 2000 with a Master’s Degree in Nursing as an acute care nurse practitioner and earned board certification in the following year. She became licensed as a clinical nurse specialist with national certification in 2001. She has extensive experience in the care of cancer patients and is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing. Miranda has specialized in critical care, cardiac surgery as well as thoracic and orthopedic oncology. She has been a nurse practitioner in Radiation Oncology since 2006. Her expertise includes patient education, skin care management and symptom management for patients under treatment in radiation.

Aaron Janssen started his journey in 1984, when at 16, he joined the volunteer fire department in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1985 he arrived first on the scene of a structure fire with another firefighter before any BCFD engines. They entered without airpacks and rescued the elderly family, Aaron was given a Citation of Merritt from the Mayor of Albuquerque, NM.
He later worked in South Central LA and as an EMT in Oakland at Allied Ambulance during the late 1980s. He responded to the Cypress Structure collapse and earthquake related fires/accidents plus numerous 911s calls during the next 72 hours. Aaron and many others received awards for their service from the County of Alameda, California during the crisis.
In 1994, after spending over 10 years in Fire and EMS, Aaron transitioned into network engineering, where he designed, then managed Albuquerque Public School’s Wide Area Network. Subsequently relocating to Phoenix to work for McAfee in 1999, Aaron took a position as Sales Engineering Director for Europe based in London, England for several years.
He went on to establish Marine Data Systems (Janssen & Associates) a company specializing in IT consulting to the high-end marine market and spent 2 years living on the Spanish island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean.
After traveling to over 30 countries, he returned to the United States in 2005. Aaron has since held senior management positions with leading network security companies and supported many community organizations. He is currently coordinating development of Google Glassware which is specifically designed for public safety, disaster management and homeland security related applications.
In addition to being a technology entrepreneur, Aaron has always been involved in charity, establishing EMSPTSD.org and GoodDeedExchange.org. He enjoys his family, many friends from other countries, keeping up on current events / international relations, geopolitics, piloting helicopters, private aerospace and NASA.
